Design and Build

The iPhone 14 has a clean design that is very similar to the iPhone 13. It is made of an aluminum frame with an aerospace-grade front that is a Ceramic Shield, and a back in glass, which allows wireless charging. With dimensions of 5.78 x 2.82 x 0.31 inches (146.7 x 71.5 x 7.8 mm) and a weight of 6.07 ounces (172g), it is slim and lightweight to hold. The device has started shipping in five colors, including Blue, Purple, Midnight, Starlight, and (PRODUCT)RED, to a Yellow variant, which was added in March 2023, making the total six colors in the lineup. The mute switch is still there, alongside the side volume and power buttons. The U.S. version of the phone is not equipped with a physical SIM tray and makes use of eSIM technology instead.

  • Aerospace-grade aluminum enclosure
  • Ceramic Shield front (tougher than smartphone glass)
  • Glass back for wireless charging
  • IP68 rating (water and dust resistance up to 6 meters for 30 minutes)
  • Mute switch, volume rockers, side power button
  • Lightning port for charging and data transfer
  • No physical SIM in U.S. models (dual eSIM technology)

iPhone 14 Display

The iPhone 14 has a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with a resolution of 2532 x 1170 which amounts to 460 PPI (pixels per inch), so it’s an HDR10 and Dolby Vision display. Same as iPhone 13’s, the display has 800 nits that are typical for the brightness of it, and 1200 nits that is really visible when exposed to sunlight. In comparison to other smartphones in the same price range, the 60Hz refresh rate of this phone has been considered as a rather low value. The notch still occupies the top of the phone and is home to the TrueDepth camera, allowing face recognition, whereas the Pro models get better features like ProMotion and Always-On display.

  • 6.1-inch OLED (Super Retina XDR)
  • 2532 x 1170 resolution, 460 PPI
  • HDR10 and Dolby Vision support
  • 800 nits (typical), 1200 nits (peak)
  • Ceramic Shield protection
  • 60Hz refresh rate (no ProMotion)
Specification Details
Size 6.1 inches (15.40 cm diagonally)
Type Super Retina XDR OLED
Resolution 2532 x 1170 pixels, 460 PPI
Brightness 800 nits (typical), 1200 nits (peak)
HDR Support HDR10, Dolby Vision
Refresh Rate 60Hz
Protection Ceramic Shield

The display excels for media consumption, with rich colors and deep blacks, but the 60Hz refresh rate and notch feel outdated compared to the iPhone 14 Pro’s Dynamic Island and 120Hz ProMotion. Reviewers note its quality but highlight the lack of modern display advancements.

Performance and Software

The iPhone 14 is also equipped with the A15 Bionic like the iPhone 13 Pro. The chip, which is similar to the iPhone 13 Pro, has a 6-core CPU, 5-core GPU, and 16-core Neural Engine. The new iPhone contains 6GB of RAM and is available with three storage capacities at the following prices: 128GB ($599), 256GB ($699), or 512GB ($899), which provide excellent support for various kinds of applications. Also, the device is running iOS 16 at the time of the beginning of sales, but the users will be able to upgrade it to future versions until it reaches iOS 18, which supports features like satellite and Crash Detection. This chip, in detail, brings the performance of its graphics above the A15 chip in the iPhone 13, but it still has the same specification as last year’s Pro models.

Test iPhone 14 Score
Geekbench 5 (Single-Core) 1,731
Geekbench 5 (Multi-Core) 4,553
3DMark Wild Life Unlimited 9,370, 56 fps

The A15 Bionic delivers flagship performance, with fluid animations and no overheating during intensive tasks like gaming. However, the lack of a newer chip (like the A16 in Pro models) and occasional software bugs in early iOS 16 releases were noted by users. Apple guarantees at least five years of software updates.

Camera System

The iPhone 14 is a product that includes a dual-camera system, which consists of a 12MP Main camera (f/1.5, 26mm, optical image stabilization) and a 12MP Ultra-Wide camera (f/2.4, 13mm, 120° field of view). The highlights of the Main camera are the big sensor which is good for low-light scenes and the faster aperture that enables the better low-light performance. Also, another advantage is the 12MP camera's faster Photonic Engine, which in turn will be improved in processing image quality. The 12MP TrueDepth front camera (f/1.9) can autofocus and it also enables Face ID. The video recording quality is up to 4K Dolby Vision at 60 fps, and the image is electronically stabilized. Record the moving action normally as if the camera were on a gimbal with the use of the Action mode.

Camera Specifications
Rear Main 12MP, f/1.5, 26mm, OIS
Rear Ultra-Wide 12MP, f/2.4, 13mm, 120° FOV
Front 12MP, f/1.9, autofocus, Face ID
Video 4K Dolby Vision 60 fps, 1080p 240 fps slo-mo
Features Night mode, Portrait, Cinematic, Action mode

The camera system delivers vibrant, detailed photos and excellent video, with Action mode praised for steady footage. However, the lack of a telephoto lens and 60Hz display for video playback are drawbacks compared to Pro models or Android competitors.

Battery and Charging

The maximum capacity of the iPhone 14 battery is 3,279mAh, capable of rendering up to 20 hours of video playback, which means the iPhone 13 has lost its status because of its not very good performance. 16 hours for mixed use in the real-world tests are indicated. Its recharge rates are 20W wired charge (50% in half an hour), 15W MagSafe, and 7.5W Qi wireless charge. However, there is a cable for it, but there is no charger included.

Model Video Playback (Hours) Real-World Test
iPhone 14 20 ~16h
iPhone 13 19 ~15h
iPhone 14 Plus 26 ~20h

Battery life is reliable but not class-leading, with the iPhone 14 Plus offering better endurance. MagSafe support is a plus, but the Lightning port and slower charging speeds lag behind USB-C competitors.

Connectivity

The iPhone 14 handset is featuring a Qualcomm Snapdragon modem that is Qualcomm Snapdragon X65 for 5G (sub-6 GHz and mmWave in the U.S.), thus ensuring fast file downloading in the city areas. It also connects with devices via Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.0, and dual eSIM (no physical SIM in the U.S.). Satellite connectivity for Emergency SOS and Crash Detection provides a higher level of safety in off-grid scenarios. The U1 ultra-wideband chip permits the function of Precision Finding with AirTags.

Feature Details
Cellular 5G (sub-6 GHz, mmWave in U.S.), LTE, VoLTE
Modem Qualcomm Snapdragon X65
Wi-Fi Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax)
Bluetooth 5.0
SIM Dual eSIM, no physical SIM in U.S.
Satellite Emergency SOS, Crash Detection
Ultra-Wideband U1 chip supported

The connectivity suite is robust, with mmWave 5G offering high-speed potential in supported areas. Satellite features are innovative, but Bluetooth 5.0 is slightly dated compared to newer standards.

Pricing and Availability

The basic iPhone 14 model is available at $599 for 128GB, $699 for 256GB, and $899 for 512GB, as the prices are apparently discounted from the original $799 at launch in the last month of 2022. On September 9, 2022, pre-orders were made open and sales started from September 16, 2022. Customers can purchase it directly from Apple, can subscribe to the carriers and get the phone almost for free like AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile, and also can go to the retailers such as Best Buy and Walmart for the purchase. Those who have old models of iPhones can get a part of their money back through the trade-in programs. It has been not available in Europe since December 2024.

Storage Price (USD) Monthly (24 mo)
128GB $599 $24.95
